MID-SUMMER RECAP!
07.16.08
To all of our friends, we hope that you are enjoying your summer.
Australia was a great success. It was a wonderful treat to return to see all of our friends, and work with their incredible Symphony Orchestras.
Following Australia, we traveled to Manila, which was simply a thrill. Appearing at the Araneta Coliseum to a sold out crowd, I stood on the same stage that I was the first singer to perform on in 1960. There too, I was happy to meet some old friends and make many new ones.
Last week, we traveled to Ogunquit, ME to see the Ogunquit Playhouse's production of Breaking Up is Hard to Do, with Renee Taylor. Having been a fan of hers for so long, it was great to see her performing in my show with such a wonderful cast.
Hoping to see everyone in Westbury, NY, where I have the great pleasure of working with my old friend, the great Connie Francis.

ONE UNFORGETTABLE EVENING!!!!
11.01.07
On October 26, 2007 at Avery Fisher Hall, Neil was honored with a tribute entitled "Neil Sedaka: 50 Years of Hits
Introduced by legendary New York DJ "Cousin" Bruce Morrow, the evening began with a video from Sir Elton John, who's AIDS Foundation was the designated charity for the net profits the show earned. Elton composed a melody of three of Neil's classics, "Breaking Up is Hard to Do", "Laughter in the Rain", and "Calendar Girl", and made a beautiful tribute to Neil.
David Foster took the stage saluting Neil, before introducing his protégé, Renee Olstead, who did an amazing rendition of "Should've Never Let You Go", with David accompanying her on piano.
The Captain and Tennille followed with "Love Will Keep Us Together". Toni Tennille, sounding as wonderful as she did when "Love Will Keep Us Together" first peaked in 1975, told the audience, "Without Neil, there would be no "Captain and Tennille".
The evening continued with Dion's terrific take on "Calendar Girl", standing solo, with his acoustic guitar, while "The Bad Plus" came out and did a very different arrangement of "Laughter in the Rain".
Clay Aiken was there to salute Neil as well, belting "Solitaire", bringing the house down with the song that would eventually help land Clay in the Top 2 on FOX's "American Idol" in 2003.
Lou Christie was on hand as well, with a powerhouse performance of one of Neil's forgotten children, "Sing Me, Sing Me".
Barry Manilow, who could not attend the tribute, sent along a video commending Neil's career, and hailing "The Hungry Years", as one of the greatest pop songs ever written.
Natalie Cole did a beautiful rendition of "Breaking Up is Hard to Do", adding a tremendous amount of soul to the song.
The fabulous Connie Francis sang the title track from the film "Where the Boys Are", sounding as incredible as she did when it was first recorded in 1960.
Paul Shaffer then took the stage, giving the audience a little history lesson about himself, and Neil’s influence on him, then breaking into an impromptu performance of "Next Door to An Angel", before bringing Neil to the stage.
An overwhelmed Neil took the stage to a standing ovation. Opening his set with "The Diary", "Oh, Carol!", and "The Hungry Years", a song that "everyone always asks for".
Neil told the crowd that he wanted to do some duets with these wonderful artists, and first brought back Paul to do a charming rendition of "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen".
He then brought Connie Francis back out, who told the story of how they first met; when Neil and Howard Greenfield auditioned their material for her. They then sang "Stupid Cupid" together, the first song of Neil's that Connie recorded. The chemistry of their performance showed that no matter how much time had passed, their presence together summed up what the evening was all about - the history of Neil Sedaka.
David and Paul both returned to the stage to accompany Neil on "Bad Blood", with Mr. Foster playing the Electric Piano, as he did on the Original Recording in 1975, and Paul singing the background vocal, made famous by Elton John. Even without Elton's vocals, the song sounded like a carbon copy of the original.
The Captain and Tennille joined Neil on stage once more, for a duet of "Lonely Night (Angel Face)", for which The Captain and Tennille scored another #1 in 1976.
The band left the stage, leaving Neil and his piano to the audience. Playing one of his seldom heard gems, "One More Ride on the Merry Go Round", as well as showcasing one of his current show-stoppers, "You", bringing the crowd to their feet.
The band returned to join Neil on "Laughter in the Rain", the song that "brought him out of retirement".
The evening was a tremendous success, closing with the entire ensemble singing Neil's classic "That's When The Music Takes Me".
Neil sends his sincere thanks to all the artists that appeared in the evening, which surely made it an unforgettable night. He also sends out his thanks to the producer of the evening, Michael Dorf, and all his crew who helped put this show together, as well as Michael Blake, the musical director, who took every note of the evening with the utmost sincerity.
Please check our review section for Roger Friedman's article about the evening.
